An Analysis of Amir’s Initiation in The Kite Runner

摘要

《追风筝的人》是美籍阿富汗裔作家卡勒德·胡赛尼的第一部小说，也是第一部由阿富汗裔作家创作的英文小说。自2003年第一次出版后，收到广泛关注和好评，被无数读者阅读。小说讲述了阿富汗少年关于友谊、亲情、背叛、救赎的故事，以阿米尔和哈桑追风筝事件为开端，展现了主人公成长的过程。书中不仅表达了对战争的控诉、还对阿富汗种族问题和宗教问题有深刻的反思。在国外，对于小说的赞扬与评论多出现在报纸杂志上，在学术界并没有引起足够的重视。中国学者对于小说背叛与救赎主题研究较多，但对于主人公成长的研究却不多，也有从成长小说角度讨论作品的，但更多重点也是在成长小说角度讨论作品结构，缺少对主人公阿米尔成长变化历程的动态分析。本文旨在呈现阿米尔动态的成长历程及其成长的现实意义。

本文从简述成长小说的起源发展入手，进而鉴定《追风筝的人》作为成长小说所具备的要素，接着详细探讨分析主人公三个成长历程，即童年、青少年至成年以及成年后，加以典型案例来论证其成长过程中所经历的种种体验，有爱有恨，有恐惧有背叛，有反抗有迷茫，更有最终的觉醒。通过主人公的成长，小说家胡塞尼表达了他对成长环境包括社会环境和家庭环境的深刻认识，环境极大的影响了一个人的成长。阿米尔的成长还具有普遍性的意义，即每个人只有在精神层面彻底觉悟才能真正认识自我，实现自我救赎。

Abstract

The Kite Runner is the first novel in English by Khaled Hosseini(1965~), an Afghan-born-Amrician author. Since the first publication in 2003, it has received extensive attention and praise from all over the world. The novel tells the story of Amir about friendship, betrayal and redemption. With Amir’s and Hasan’s chasing kite incident as the beginning, the hero’s growing processes as followed. The novel not only expresses the accusations against the war, but also has a profound reflection on the Afghan racial issues and religious issues. In foreign countries, the praise and comments on the novel appear in the newspapers and magazines. However, it did not cause enough attention in the academic circle. Most Chinese scholars studied the theme of betrayal and redemption in the novel, and very few studied the growth of the hero. Others emphasize the structure of the novel in the perspective of growing novels,  yet lacking any dynamic analysis of Amir’s initiation. This paper attempts to show a  dynamic growing process of Amir.

This paper begins with a brief introduction to Initiation Novel, and the body part contains three growing processes of the hero—childhood, teenager to adulthood, and adulthood. Some typical cases are used to prove the hero’s growth. Through Amir’s initiation, Hosseini conveys this creative purposes, i.e., the relationship between development and environment, the necessity of spiritual awakening and self-redemption, all of which are of vital social value and realistic meaning.
