On Translation of Long Sentences in EST

摘要

科技英语文本的典型特点是句子较长，句子结构复杂，形式逻辑表达严密，内容丰富，层次分明，句法形式特征突出，因此长句翻译成为科技英语翻译研究的重点和难点。英语表达重形合，汉语表达重意合，这是英汉两种语言最重要的形式区别特征。本论文以英汉两者语言的形式区别特征为研究基础，通过对科技英语长句的句法特征分析，指出科技英语长句拆分的基本逻辑和策略，并探讨使用切分法、拆译法及综合法等翻译方法来解决科技英语长句的翻译难题。

Abstract

EST texts are characterized by long sentences. The complicated structure, the precise logic, the rich content, the clear layering, and the distinctive syntactic and formal features make the translation of long sentences a key and difficult point in EST translation. Hypotaxis and parataxis are the most distinctive formal linguistic features of English and Chinese, with English more hypotatic and Chinese more paratactic. On the basis of the most distinctive features of English and Chinese, this thesis analyzes the syntactic features of long sentences in EST, points out the basic logic and strategy of splitting, and probes into the translation of long sentences in EST by means of some techniques such as splitting, division and synthesis.
