摘要

安德烈娅·利维（Andrea Levy，1956-）是英国牙买加裔女作家。其代表作《小岛》，以1948年的伦敦为背景，通过描写牙买加少女霍滕斯（Hortense）自小对英国的向往以及后来来到英国后的生活磨合，和一直生活在英国的当地人奎妮（Queenie）在战争前后的生活变化，她们两相互交叉在一起的爱情和生活故事，讲述了牙买加移民在英国的生存处境——移民身份的尴尬，对牙买加本土的怀念，对理想的追求，与当地居民的文化碰撞和逐渐融合。不仅如此，这部作品展现了二战后牙买加移民和英国人民对自我身份的怀疑和幻灭，并着重描写了战后人民对自我身份的认知和重建过程。

本文运用英国牙买加裔文化批评家斯图亚特·霍尔（Stuart Hall，1932-2014）的身份认同理论，通过国家、种族、阶级三个方面，研究了小说中不同文化身份人物的国家身份、种族身份以及阶级身份的变化发展。四个主人公人生经历，不仅展现了战后人民的生活状态，更展现了全球移民潮背景下，人们身份认同的崩溃冲突和融合发展。小说最后混血婴儿的诞生展现了身份认同在挣扎中最终走向了妥协和融合。这其中不仅包含了妥协，更孕育了希望。

Abstract

Andrea Levy (1956-) now is the most influenced Jamaican-British writer. The representative work Small Island takes London in 1948 as the background. The writer describes the Jamaican girl Hortense’s yearning to the British since childhood and the astonishment when she comes to Britain. And the writer describes the local British woman Queenie’s change after the war. And their correlated love and life stories show the immigration status. There are not only the embarrassment of immigration identity, the missing of Jamaica, the pursuit for ideals, but also the cultural collision with the local residents and the gradual integration. Besides, Small Island shows the doubt and disillusion of the British and Jamaica immigrants. What’s more the writer pays attention to the recognition and reestablishment of the people after war.

The novel is a book to describe immigrants’ life stories after war and different identity recognition processes based on different environments. This paper uses the Jamaican-British cultural critic Stuart Hall’s (1932-2014) identity theory. And through the three aspects of country, race, class, to study the different identity recognition characters in the novel and to analyze the national identity, ethnic identity and class identity change development. Four protagonists’ experiences, not only show people's state of life after the war, more show the conflicts and fusion of identity under the background of immigration. Finally, the mixed-race baby’s birth shows identity eventually going to compromise and fusion in struggling. This contains not only the compromise, but also the hope.
