An Analysis of the Horror Writing in Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep

摘要

史蒂芬•金(1947- )是一位作品多产，屡获奖项的美国当代畅销书作家。2003年美国全国图书基金会授予他美国文学终身成就奖。他的作品不仅题材众多，而且恐怖小说尤为出众，概括了此一类别的整个发展沿革，他曾被尊称为“恐怖小说之王”。其中《闪灵》（1977）的续集《睡眠医生》（2013）无论在创作手法还是恐怖主题的揭示上，都堪称其作品中最为璀璨之星，获得了2013年布拉姆史托克奖的最佳提名。这部作品主要描述了丹尼与其同伴为帮助同样具有“闪灵”能力但陷入危险的小女孩阿布拉同邪恶组织展开生死斗争的过程。本文尝试从创作手法的运用与恐怖元素的构成两个方面，探讨史蒂芬•金是如何通过《睡眠医生》将恐怖带入现实，让“恐怖”回归以及恐怖背后所揭示的主题。

本论文共包含五个部分。前言部分主要介绍作家史蒂芬•金及《睡眠医生》的创作背景及文献回顾及论文结构。从某种程度来说，本文具有一定创新性，可以看作是第一篇从恐怖主题书写方面研究《睡眠医生》的论文。

正文部分包含三章内容。第一章，介绍《睡眠医生》中常用的悬念、神秘、场面等写作手法，解释定义，分析其如何利用读者心理来构造并加强作品恐怖效果。第二章，强调《睡眠医生》所包含的环境、角色、情节及视觉效应等恐怖元素对本书恐怖书写的构造作用。第三章，分析恐怖书写背后作者揭示的社会对孩子成长关注、人性善良与勇气方面的主题。

本论文的结论部分。本文立足于恐怖主题书写，一方面概括上文提及的恐怖元素与创作手法在恐怖书写对恐怖效果的构造和加强作用；另一方面，从内容主旨方面分析恐怖背后揭示的社会伦理、人情关系、人性善良方面的主题。

Abstract

Stephen King (1947-) awarded a life-time achievement medal by the American National Foundation in 2003 is a popular and prolific writer in today’s America. He, who is regarded as “the King of horror fiction”, is known for his horror fiction which demonstrates the whole development of this genre. As a sequel to Shinning (19770), Doctor Sleep (2013) won the domination of the Bram Stoke Award in 2013 for it is outstanding among his works both in writing techniques and themes. This novel describes a story about Dan and his fellows who carry out a violent fight against one evil tribe in order to protect a young girl, Abra, with shinning as them. This essay aims at analyzing horror writing from the perspectives of horror element component, writing technique using and themes.

There are five parts in this thesis. The introduction briefly presents Stephen King and his works, literature review and the concept of horror writing and the significance of the paper. To some extent, this paper is innovative, which can be regarded as the first paper of doing research on Doctor Sleep from the perspective of horror writing.

The main body of the thesis embodies three chapters. Chapter One talks about those writing techniques applied Doctor Sleep. Their definitions and analysis of creating and strengthening horror effect from the aspect of psychology are presented. Chapter Two introduces those horror elements contained in this novel and analyses their contribution in horror writing through exact examples. Chapter Three highlights themes unveiled in this novel from the aspects of social morality and human nature.

The last part is the conclusion, rooted in the horror writing, aiming at summarizing that on one hand, the significance of horror elements and writing techniques in horror inspiration and creation and on the other hand, the main themes concealed behind horror in this novel.
