摘要 

作为一种隐含表达的方式，委婉语可以有效地作为润滑剂，将粗糙、刺耳和直接的单词转换为优雅、迂回和令人愉悦的词语。人们很容易接受这些美好的词汇，并在其他人之间取得更好的交际效果，因此委婉语已逐渐地引起研究者和学者的更多关注。在Verschueren（2000）提出的语言顺应理论基础上，本文旨在对电影《国王的演讲》中涉及的委婉语进行研究。在交际语境中，本文分析委婉语对交际者心理世界、社交世界、物理世界的顺应情况，目的在于揭示使用委婉语实质上是交际者依据不同的交际需求而做出的一种语言选择，是顺应交际语境的结果。从理论上说，本文丰富了其研究视角，从而为其他基于顺应论的语言现象的研究提供借鉴。从现实上说，本篇论文对跨文化交际与英语教学有一定的指导意义。笔者最终得出结论：英语委婉语的使用是一种语言选择过程，是动态顺应交际双方心理世界、社交世界及物理世界的一种结果。

本论文包括五个部分。 第一部分是研究背景，目标和意义的介绍。 第二部分是文献综述，总结了以往西方对东方的研究。 第三部分讨论了Verschueren的顺应论，作为论文的理论框架。 第四部分展示了我对委婉语如何适应交际语境的观点，以及电影“国王的演讲”中演讲者心理，社会和物质世界的一些例子。 第五部分是论文的结论。
