On Culture Identity in Brick Lane from the Perspective of Postcolonialism

摘要

莫妮卡·阿里是著名的孟加拉裔英国女作家，她的长篇小说《砖巷》一经出版就大获成功。《砖巷》中的人物境遇体现了多元文化背景下少数民族裔文化身份建立的复杂性。本论文从后殖民主义角度出发，探究小说中三位主要人物自我身份建立的过程，分析不同人物文化身份的成因。本论文共五个部分。第一部分介绍了莫妮卡·阿里和《砖巷》以及国内外对于《砖巷》这部小说的文学研究。第二部分简要介绍后殖民主义以及在该语境下的文化身份。第三部分主要讨论了文化身份构建在《砖巷》中的具体表现。第四部分研究并分析产生不同文化身份的原因。第五部分是论文的总结。本论文希望用分析文化身份构建的方式，唤起人们对少数民族裔混杂文化的关注，倡导文化多样性，在全球化背景下，实现东西方不同文明的交流融合。

Abstract

Monica Ali is a distinguished Bangladesh-British writer who enjoys great prestige in the world after the publication of Brick Lane. The experiences of the main characters in this novel symbolize the necessity of establishing ethnic mixed culture identity in the background of multiple cultures. This paper explores the process of establishing culture identity among three leading characters and analyzes causes to diverse culture identity in Brick Lane. The paper consists of five parts. Part one briefly introduces Monica Ali and Brick Lane and gives literature review at home and abroad in recent years. Part two interprets the concept of postcolonialism and culture identity in the context of postcolonialism. Part three mainly discusses the construction of culture identity in Brick Lane. Part four focuses on the causes to diverse culture identity. Part five is the conclusion of this paper. This paper hopes to arouse people’s attention towards the ethnic mixed culture, promote cultural diversity and achieve the integration of different cultures in East and West by the study on the construction of culture identity.
