The Silent Art in English Teaching—The Application of Nonverbal Teaching Method in Middle School English Teaching    

摘要

语言是人们日常生产生活的交流工具,它由书面语言(the written language),口头语言(the spoken language)和体态语言(the body language)组成。语言是一种任意的符号系统,主要通过声音和字符表现出来,是人类独有的文化交际支柱。然而人们在交际过程中,不仅使用语言交际,而且还使用各种非语言方式,如肢体动作、面部表情、手势、距离、身体方位等可视性的无声语言来实现交流信息、传达感情的目的。

英语课堂教学是一门艺术,随着中学英语教学课程改革的进一步深入,非言语教学作为一种不可忽视的教学手段,与中学英语课堂教学的联系日益密切。作为教师,我们的行为方式经常是学生们所模仿和学习的对象,如果中学英语教师在授课和生活中重视非言语教学与教学具体坏境相结合,并在教学过程中恰当的应用,不仅可以增强教师自身语言的表现力和吸引力,也有助于提高学生的理解能力,更好的培养学生的交际能力。

本文首先对非言语交际的基本理论进行阐述,介绍非言语交际作为一种教学手段在教学应用过程中的作用和特点。并将理论与实践有机相结合,结合自己的亲生教学经验,探索非言语交际作为一种教学手段在中学英语课堂教学中的运用。

Abstract

Language is a communication tool in people’s daily life. It consists of the written language, the spoken language and the body language. Language is an arbitrary symbol system, which mainly expressed by voice and characters. It is the unique communication backbone of human being. However, in the process of communication, people not only use the language communication but also use a variety of nonverbal ways, such as body gestures, facial expressions, gestures, body dimension and so on to achieve the purpose of exchanging information and conveying emotion.

English teaching is an art. With the further deepening of the National English Curriculum in middle school English teaching. Nonverbal communication, as a means of teaching method, which has a status that can not be ignored, is closely related to the teaching of English in middle school. As teachers, our behaviors are often imitated and learnt by students. If the middle school English teachers attach the importance to the combination of nonverbal teaching and teaching environment accordingly in teaching and living, and apply it properly in the teaching process, can not only enhance the expressive power and attraction of teachers’ own language, but also help to improve the students’ comprehension and develop their communicative competence.

This thesis tries to explain the basic theory of nonverbal communication firstly. Then, it introduces the functions and characteristics of nonverbal communication which is applied as a teaching method in English teaching. Combined with my own teaching experience, this paper also explores the use of nonverbal communication in English classroom teaching in middle school.
