Translator’s Subjectivity Viewed from Chinese Version Of The Joy Luck Club Translated by Cheng Naishan in 2006 under Rewriting Theory

Abstract

The "Cultural Turn" in translation, emerged from the 1970s, shifted the focus of translation from the linguistic aspect to a cultural one. According to Lefevere (2004), translation studies should not only focus on the language translation and textual comparison but also should pay attention to the factors of society, politics, economy, culture and customs. Translator’s subjectivity has received more and more attention and become one of the most popularized topics in translation study. Lefevere also introduced the concept of "rewriting", and explicitly put forward the idea "translation is rewriting" in Translation, Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literature Frame. He emphasized that there are three important elements which would be used to analyze translator’s subjectivity: Ideology, Poetics and Patronage.

American writer Amy Tan is the author of The Joy Luck Club which has been translated multiple times. This thesis selects Cheng Naishan’s translation in 2006 as a reference, based on the Rewriting Theory and sees three elements as a starting point to analyze the embodiment of translator’s subjectivity. Through careful study, the thesis draws a conclusion: the translator, as the subject of translation, will be inevitably influenced by his life environment and experience as well as social and political factors.
