On Translator’s Subjectivity under the Perspective of Eco-translatology ----A Case Study of John Minford’s English Translation of The Deer and the Cauldron

Abstract

The pragmatic turn of western philosophy in 1970s and the cultural turn of translation studies in 1990s opened up a new perspective for translation studies. More and more scholars began to advocate the translation view of translator-centered and deny translator’s subordinate status. The translator's subjectivity has become an important research topic.

The word of “translation” itself contains the meaning of “people”, which means the translator is the subject of translation that coordinates the writer and the reader as well as the source language and the target language. It can be said that the translator's subjectivity is reflected in the whole translation process.

Martial arts novels, which inherited five-thousand years of Chinese history and culture, have become an extremely important translation object. However, the translation process requires highly of the translators’ ability. Therefore, how to perfectly embody the translator's subjectivity is the most essential part of a good martial arts novel translation

In this paper, the author regards the specific manifestation patterns of translator's subjectivity in Minford's English version, The Deer and the Cauldron as the research object. Under the guidance of Eco-translatology, the author aims to find out how to translate the martial arts works well and resolve the conflicts of the use of translator's subjectivity in the translation of them. In doing so, the author comes to the conclusion of the mutual adaptation and selection between translators and translation environment. On one hand, translators need to choose the suitable work and make proper acceptation and rejection. On the other hand, in order to survive, they should constantly improve their translation ability so as to be responsible for both works and readers, and deliver the Chinese culture to the world better.
