Abstract
Horror movies have enjoyed continuous popularity because of their unique charms since their birth. They are especially favored by young people. Many good movies were successful at the box office and got good word of mouth. Up to now, horror movies have developed into distinctive styles in accordance with geographical factors, among which American and Japanese horror movies are the most popular and influential. They either provide direct visual stimulations by bloody and disgusting frames, or make audience tremble with mysterious plots and strange sceneries.
This thesis will depend on Noёl Carroll’s Philosophy of Horror in the discussion of the distinctive features of American and Japanese horror movies and their success. For example, American horror movies mainly create shocking and real pictures depending on advanced technology while Japanese ones are good at constructing horror that is close to life.
