On Subtitle Translation of Masters in the Forbidden City from the Perspectives of Domestication and Foreignization_英语论文

摘要

纪录片《我在故宫修文物》是纪念故宫博物馆成立九十周年的献礼纪录片,也是中国文化走出去时代大潮下的文化产物。纪录片汉英字幕翻译的研究对于指导我们更好地传播中国文化,并在文化走出去过程中保持中国文化独特性具有重要意义。本文从美国著名翻译理论学者韦努蒂的归化异化两种翻译策略的理论视角,对纪录片《我在故宫修文物》的字幕翻译进行译例分析研究。在研究中,我们发现译者采用了大量的归化翻译策略,譬如采用了意译,而极少使用异化翻译策略。我们认为这违背《我在故宫修文物》要实现文化走出去的初衷。我们相信译者选择大范围地使用归化翻译策略是出于扩大纪录片海外影响的考虑;也是出于对我们的文化可能无法被外国观众理解和接受的担忧。 但是,我们认为在今后的汉英字幕翻译实践中,我们需要更多地采用异化翻译,譬如采用音译和直译,以便在文化走出去的过程中保持文化特色。

Abstract

Masters in the Forbidden City is a tribute to the 90th anniversary of the Palace Museum’s establishment and a cultural product in the trend of Chinese culture’s going-out. And studies on the Chinese-English subtitle translation are of great significance to guide us to better spread Chinese culture and preserve its unique features in the process of Chinese culture’s going-out. Thus, this thesis  conducts a case analysis on the subtitle translation of the documentary, Masters in the Forbidden City, from the perspective of Venuti’s domestication and foreignization. During our research, we find that the translator adopts a lot of domestication translation strategies, like liberal translation, and uses little foreignization translation strategy, which we think is against the original intention of this documentary, which is to achieve culture’s going-out. And we believe this choice is due to the need of expanding the scope influenced by the documentary. Besides, it is out of the concern that our culture might not be understood and accepted by the foreign audiences. However, we think that in the future Chinese-English subtitle translation practice, we need to adopt foreignization more frequently, like transliteration and literal translation, so as to maintain the features of Chinese culture in the process of going- out.
