Analysis on Wang Zuoliang’s Translation of Francis Bacon’s Essays from the Perspective of Tytler’s Translation Theory_

Abstract
Tytler’s three principles of translation was initiated by English translation theorist Tytler and published in Essay on the Principles of Translation in 1791, making great contributions to the study of translation theory. Francis Bacon’s Essays served as a classical work in English literature, with extensive contents and detailed arguments, denoting high artistic value. Since 1930s, Chinese scholars centered on the study of foreign works, for instance, Bacon’s Essays was translated by many translators such as Shui Tiantong, Wang Zuoliang, Cao Minglun and so on. Especially, Wang Zuoliang translated five pieces, including Of Truth, Of Marriage and Single life, Of Nobility, Of Beauty and Of Studies, all of which won high admiration.
In the light of above discussions, this research chooses Wang Zuoliang’s five translations of Essays based upon Tytler’s translation theory for qualitative analysis, and answers two questions: (1) What kinds of translation strategies and approaches are used in the process of translation when faced difficulties? (2) Can these translations reflect Tytler’s three principles and how does it reflect?
Through analysis, we find that Mr. Wang prefers free translation and exercises translation strategies like omission, addition, inversion of the word order and so on. As a whole, these translations reflect Tytler’s three principles. Therefore, this research may conducive to further understanding of Bacon’s Essays and has a certain enlightening effect on the study of prose translation.
