On Translation Strategies of Legends of the Condor Heroes I : A Hero Born from the Perspective of Skopos Theory_英语论文

摘要

金庸武侠小说是一个热门的话题,尤其是2018年金庸大师的逝世,更是刮起了一阵重温武侠经典的潮流。然而由于东西方文化的差异,金庸武侠小说虽早就在亚洲享畅销已久,但英译作品却少之又少。中国武侠小说应如何走出去,关键在于如何将“武”与“侠”这种文化内涵在译者笔下输出,西方读者也能在他们的语言环境下接收到同等的文化感受。为了更好地传播中国武侠文化,本文从目的论的角度,运用目的原则,连贯原则和忠实原则对《射雕英雄传》郝玉清译本进行了分析以及探索武侠作品的翻译策略。通过对书中大量译例的分析,本文总结出译者在翻译中运用了灵活多变的翻译方法,当原文比较简单,字面直译可以被西方读者理解的情况下采用直译；当直译让人无法理解原文意思时,需要意译；意译有时会使原文的文化内涵丧失,从而失去文化韵味；这需要作者充分理解文化的基础上对翻译方法做出选择。本文结合理论介绍与翻译分析,整理总结了相应的翻译策略,对中国武侠小说的英译有一定的借鉴作用。

Abstract

Jin Yong’s wuxia novel has been a hot topic, especially after his death in 2018, which causes a trend of rereading the classics of wuxia novels. However, despite the popularity of Jin Yong’s wuxia novels in Asia, due to the cultural differences between the east and the west, there are few English versions of his works. In order to push Chinese wuxia culture to go global successfully, the key is to export the cultural connotations of “wuxia” into the translator’s writings so that western readers can also receive the same cultural feelings in their language environment. In order to better spread Chinese wuxia culture, this paper makes an analysis of Anna Holmwood’s translation of Legends of the Condor Heroes І: A Hero Born and explores the translation methods of wuxia novels by applying the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Through the analysis of a large number of translation examples in the book, this paper concludes that the translator uses flexible translation methods in translation. When the source text is relatively simple and literal translation can be understood by western readers, literal translation should be adopted. When literal translation makes people unable to understand, liberal translation is needed. However, liberal translation sometimes will make the cultural connotation disappears losing the charm of Chinese culture. So it requires the author to make a choice of translation strategies on the basis of full understanding of the culture in the original text. Based on the theoretical introduction and translation analysis, this paper summarizes the corresponding translation strategies, which can be used as a reference for the translation of Chinese wuxia novels.
