摘要 

詹姆斯·乔伊斯的《都柏林人》通过十五个短篇小说展示了二十世纪在英国殖民统治下的爱尔兰人民的生存现状，深刻展示了当时社会存在的宗教、家庭、阶级等诸多矛盾。鲁迅的《呐喊》通过十四篇小说真实的描绘了从辛亥革命到五四运动的社会生活，从革命民主主义出发，揭示了种种深层次的社会矛盾。两位作家虽然相距甚远，但却不约而同地表达了相似的思想主题，通过对当时社会现状的极力展示，描摹人物内心的心理活动，用象征手法隐喻社会现状，表达作家对于当时爱尔兰和中国社会存在的种种劣根性的批判。鲁迅和詹姆斯乔伊斯都用富有渲染力的语言来展示精神瘫痪的国民，隐藏在腐朽的社会制度之下的自私、麻木、愚昧、空虚是当时国民性的真正所在。通过对这两部作品的对比研究，本文旨在更好地了解当时社会的风俗习惯和社会生活，学习在詹姆斯·乔伊斯和鲁迅身上所反映的爱国意识，探讨处在新时代背景下的以爱国主义为核心的国民性。
