E-C Translation Strategies of Financial Articles Based on the Theory of Adaptation and Selection: A Case Study of The Economist

摘要

在全球生态思潮发展的大背景下,翻译适应选择论作为一种新的翻译方式逐渐兴起。该理论借鉴达尔文的“适者生存”和“物竞天择”原理,以新的视角阐释翻译活动。目前,有关翻译适应选择论的翻译研究侧重于文学翻译,鲜有学者将其运用于英语金融类文章汉译。本文主要结合翻译适应选择论,以《经济学人》为例,分析其金融类文章的汉译策略,旨在从较为新颖的视角探讨英语金融类文章的汉译策略,为译者在翻译此类文章提供一定的参考。

本文分为四章。第一章从核心术语、翻译过程以及翻译原则和方法三个方面,对翻译适应选择论进行梳理。第二章从词汇和句法两方面分析英语金融类文章的特点。第三章基于翻译适应选择论的“适应性”,探讨《经济学人》金融类文章的汉译策略,主要阐述读者需求、译者能力和翻译生态环境等内在因素对译文的影响。第四章侧重于翻译适应选择论的“选择性”,探讨《经济学人》金融类文章的汉译策略,主要阐述语言、文化和交际等外在因素对译文的影响。

本文在回顾全文的基础上进行总结,并得出以下结论:在翻译金融类文章时,译者应充分考虑语言维、文化维和交际维的三维转换,使译文完整、准确地表达原文的含义,从而适应全球化背景下金融业发展的潮流。

Abstract

With reference to the principle of “survival of the fittest in natural selection”, the theory of translation as adaptation and selection (TAS) as a new theory gradually springs up, explaining the translation process in a new way. At present, the translation studies related to the theory mainly focus on literary translation instead of the E-C translation of financial articles. Based on the theory, this paper analyzes the E-C translation strategies of the financial articles of The Economist, aiming to discuss the strategies from a new perspective, and provides some references for the translators of financial articles.

This paper is comprised of four chapters. First, it briefly introduces the theory of TAS from the aspects of core terms, translation process, and translation principles and methods. In the second chapter, features of financial articles are introduced from lexical and syntactic perspectives. In the third chapter, based on “adaptation” in this theory, it discusses the E-C translation strategies of financial articles extracted from The Economist, and mainly expounds the impacts of internal factors including readers’ needs, the translators’ competence and the translational eco-environment on the target text. Similarly, the fourth chapter analyzes the impacts of external factors from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions based on “selection” in this theory.

In conclusion, during translation, the translator should take linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions into consideration. In this way, he can translate the source text into the target text completely and accurately, catering to the development of the financial industry under the globalization.
