Comparative Study of the Interpersonal Meanings of English and Chinese Intercollegiate Debating Discourses 

摘要

结合韩礼德的系统功能语言学理论框架,本文对比分析了“外研社”杯全国英语辩论赛和全国大专辩论赛中的语气、人称和情态资源的选择。在语气的运用上,中英辩论语篇中陈述句的使用频率都是最高的。由于语用习惯不同,疑问句的使用在中文语篇中偏高。而在情态词类型的选择上,可能性情态使用频率接近50%,义务性和能力型情态较低。从情态值看,低值和中值的情态词在中文辩论中占多数,在英文辩论语篇中,为了加强对事实陈述的有效性,中值情态词运用最频繁。在人称的选择上,中英辩论语篇的共同点是高频的使用“我们/we”,而由于中文辩论赛中正反双方是面对面的,因此辩手更多地使用第二人称来反驳对方,而在英语辩论赛中,选手是轮流面对观众陈述观点的,所以在英文辩论语篇中第一和第三人称的运用比第二人称更广泛。

Abstract

Based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar, this paper compares the Mood, Modality and Pronoun systems in Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) Cup National English Debating Competition and the National Varsity debate. In the Mood system, declarative sentences are most frequently used in both English and Chinese debating discourses. Owing to the difference of speech habits, the frequency of the use of interrogative is higher in Chinese debating discourses than that of English. In the Modality system, English and Chinese debating discourses share similar features in the use of different types of modal verbs. Among which the ones which express possibility are used in the highest frequency, almost 50%. From the aspect of modal values, low and median value modal verbs account for the major part in the Chinese debating discourses, and in the English debating discourses, median value modal verbs are used at a high rate. In Pronoun system, “we/我们” is used frequently in both of the discourses. What’s more, the second person is more used in Chinese debating discourses. On the contrary, in English discourses, the frequency of the use of the first person and the third person outnumbers that of the second person. The obvious distinction may be due to the different competition system.
