作为美国文学史上最杰出的作家之一，约瑟夫·海勒以其伟大的长篇小说《第二十二条军规》(1961)而闻名于世，成为 20 世纪美国黑色幽默文学的中流砥柱。在小说《第二十二

条军规》中，海勒描述了二战期间驻扎在皮亚诺萨岛的第 256 空军中队。像尤索林这样的普通士兵，他们需要执行长官制定的飞行任务来完成自己的兵役从而得到回家的机会。但是官僚阶级们，比如卡斯卡特上校，为了得到晋升和财富,忽视士兵的生命和利益，一味地将飞行任务从原本的 25 次,提升到 30 次,40 次,55 次,甚至 80 次。当尤索林意识到这残酷的战争对于官僚阶级们来说只是满足私欲的工具而已,他对待战争、死亡和所遇到的不公平情况的态度发生了改变。本文以尤索林性格转变的表现为基础，着重论述了他性格发生的三个主要原因:个人性格的软弱、战争对人性的残酷虐杀和官吏对普通士兵的欺骗,从而表现出战争的残酷和官僚主义荒谬和贪婪,进而引申出在当今的世界,经久不息的战争和仍然存在的官僚主义是极具危害的,需要被消灭。
