摘要

《红字》是美国作家霍桑最经典的文学作品之一，深受广大读者喜爱，尤其是女主人公海斯特身上所体现的女性主义更是吸引了众多目光。本文以女性主义以及清教思想作为理论基础，结合作者的家庭生活社会以及其矛盾的清教主义思想在作品中的体现，探究霍桑女性意识的形成，分析海斯特的人物形象。海斯特不仅是一位独立、有着强烈自尊心的女性，同时也是一位具有反抗精神、追求自由的女性主义先行者。希望本研究对海斯特人物形象的女性主义解读能够给当代女性提供一些人生启示。

Abstract

As one of the most representative literature works from Hawthorne--The Scarlet Letter, especially the heroine Hester, attracts attentions from readers around the world. The theoretical basis of this thesis is about the main views of Feminism—pursuit of freedom and pursuit of equal rights, main doctrines of Puritanism about original sin, predestination and the perseverance of saints, and its influence. Exploring the formation of feminist consciousness of Hawthorne and then analyzing the personality of Hester by combining with Hawthorne’s family background, personal experience, ambivalent attitude towards puritanism and the social environment. Hester was an independent woman with self-esteem, and she was also a pioneer of feminism who was always pursuing freedom and with rebellious awareness. The analysis of the personality of Hester helps a lot to the further study on the feminism and the other literature works from Hawthorne, and women in modern society can attain some inspirations of life from it.
