摘要 

在英国文学史上，维多利亚时期是描写女性的文学崛起的时代，描述女性的作品也在这一时期大量问世，出现了一些为争取与男性平等权利而具有反抗精神的文学形象。夏洛蒂·勃朗特的《简·爱》和哈代的《德伯家的苔丝》都是当时比较典型的优秀作品，这两部作品中的女主人公简·爱和苔丝都是维多利亚时期新女性的代表，她们都曾努力与命运抗争，但是却获得了截然不同的结局。简·爱在和命运抗争中取得了胜利，最终收获了爱情；而苔丝的人生却是以悲剧收场， 在与命运的抗争中献出了自己的生命，最终走向了毁灭。本论文通过深入探究

《简·爱》和《德伯家的苔丝》这两部作品，试从简·爱和苔丝所处的社会、生活、家庭环境等多种外部因素和她们自身对女性独立、平等的不同理解，不同的爱情观和性格等内部因素出发，来分析和探讨造成这两位同时期女性的不同命运的成因，为先前的研究中未涉及的方面加以补充，以期能为日后的相关研究提供一个新的参考方向。
