摘要

霍桑在其代表作《红字》中大量运用了象征手法。本文从红字“A”，主要人物以及场景这三个方面分析霍桑在《红字》中的象征手法的运用及其意义。首先分析红字“A”随着故事情节的发展而具有不同的象征意义；其次分析主要人物的象征意义，他们分别是海斯特·白兰，亚瑟·丁梅斯代尔，罗杰·奇灵渥斯和珠儿；最后对作品中场景的象征意义进行了具体细致的分析。着重探讨象征手法在《红字》中的表现、作用以及特点，并详细解析了作品中的象征意义，作用及《红字》所独有的象征风格，以及象征手法如何从不同的侧面暗示了《红字》的主题。

Abstract

This paper attempts to explore Hawthorne’s use of symbolism in The Scarlet Letter by analyzing the symbolic meaning of the scarlet 1etter "A"，the main characters and the settings. The scarlet 1etter "A" has different symbolic significance with the development of the plot. This paper also studies the symbolic significance of the main characters: Hester Prynne, Dimmesdale Chilling Worth and Pearl. The symbolic significance of the scene is also examined in particular. Discussing the symbolism in The Scarlet Letter, this paper gives a detailed analysis of the symbolic significance of the book, and the unique feature of symbolism in The Scarlet Letter, suggests the theme of the book.
