A Metaphorical Study of Colours in The Picture of Dorian Gray

摘要

奥斯卡·王尔德是英国著名作家、戏剧家、诗人，也是唯美主义运动的倡导者。王尔德的作品以文句华丽、立意新颖和观点鲜明而驰名。《道林·格雷的画像》是王尔德对美学的领悟和运用，但自问世之日起便饱受争议。光明与黑暗，善与恶，美丽与丑陋对比鲜明贯穿全书。小说中对于色彩的精心描写与搭配暗示着主人公的命运发展，体现了故事的悲剧色彩。

色彩隐喻作为象征隐喻修辞手法的一种，揭示了小说中常见颜色与主题的密切联系，在推动剧情和塑造人物方面具有非凡意义。如今，文学作品中色彩隐喻的普遍特征和文学价值是还有待进一步开发。本文旨在结合隐喻理论，通过对色彩的细读、举例、对比分析道林·格雷这一人物形象的变化，更深入的讨论色彩隐喻对文学作品情节的推动作用。

Abstract

Oscar Wilde is a famous writer, poet, dramatist, the advocate of aestheticism art movement. His works are famous for their elegant wording, fresh ideas and outstanding opinions. Since the day The Picture of Dorian Gray has been published, the controversial about it lasts, for it represents Wilde’s comprehension and application of aesthetic. Light and darkness, kindness and evil, beauty and ugliness contrast throughout the book. Through the careful description and matching of colours, Wilde suggests the development of Dorian's fate and the tragedy of the story.

Colour metaphor is a rhetorical device and colours in literature could reveal the theme in the novel. It plays a significant role in terms of pushing the plot of the story and create characters. Today, literary value of colour metaphor in literature is a new field to be developed. This article aims to analyze and compare the colours in The Picture of Dorian Gray from the perspective of metaphor to show the changes of the character Dorian Gray, and to help readers better understand colour metaphor's role in promoting the plot.
