Comparative Validity of BEC (Vantage) and TBEM-4 Reading Tests

摘  要:剑桥商务英语考试(BEC)和商务英语专业考试(TBEM)同为语言考试,旨在测试学习者在商务环境中对外语的运用水平。本文从环境效度和后果效度方面入手,对BEC中级和TBEM-4中阅读部分的效度进行了比较研究。从环境效度方面来说,两项技能考试在考试任务,考试题型和考察技能上相似,而试题难度上也没有显著差异;在后果效度方面,大多数测试者倾向于选择参加BEC考试,因为该考试影响力大,认可度高。本文最后为中国商务英语考试的研发和完善提出建议。

Abstract: Business English Certificate (BEC) and Test for Business English Majors (TBEM) are both language tests designed for testing participators’ competence in applying foreign language into a business context. This thesis aims at comparing the validity of the reading section of Business English Certificate Vantage (BEC Vantage) and Test for Business English Majors Band 4 (TBEM-4) in terms of context validity and consequential validity. In the aspect of context validity, the task, question type and testing skills of the two tests are similar to each other. There is no significant difference between the difficulty degrees of the two tests.  From the view of consequential validity, majorities of the subjects tend to sign up BEC (Vantage) because of its high level of recognition and great influence. At the last of the paper, it provides suggestions on the development and improvement on Business English tests in China.
