Contrastive Study on Translation Characteristics of English Movie Titles in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan

摘要

在当今各国文化快速传播与融合的时代，电影作为一门兼具科技和艺术的综合体，在中西方文化交流中占有重要的一席之地，更是作为重要的文化交流媒介备受各国关注。电影名称是电影文化重要的组成部分，既包含影片主要内容和主题，又承担吸引观众的目的，因此，一部电影的成功与否往往先取决于它的影片名称，一部优秀的电影作品，影片名称翻译应体现编剧的匠心和原名试图传递的内容。中国大陆、香港、台湾由于地域、经济、习俗的差异，对外来影片的译名不尽相同。本文以多个不同的视角，通过列举实例，探讨对比中国大陆、香港、台湾对英文电影片名的翻译特色。

Abstract

Nowadays, many cultures around the world are being transmitted and integrated at a rapid speed. Film, as a combination of technology and art, accounts for a place on this Chinese and Western cultural exchange stage. What’s more, film functions as an important medium and receives much concern all over the world. Movie title is a vital component of the film, it contains the main content, the theme, and also the purpose of attraction, so, whether a movie is successful firstly depends on its title in most cases. To be exact, an excellent film has an appropriate title translation which reflects the scriptwriter’s inventiveness and the idea originally delivered by the movie. Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are different in translating movie titles due to their location, economy, custom and many other factors. This thesis attempts to use examples to compare and discuss the translation features of English movie titles in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, from different aspects.
