An Analysis of Feminism in Desire Under the Elms

在历史的长河中，女性总是受到不公平的对待，她们没有相应的权利和地位。甚至在文学作品中也常常是推崇男性主义价值观和利益，很少涉及女性主义价值观。但是随着时代的发展，女性主义也渐渐觉醒。她们在寻求自我认同和社会身份认同的同时获得应有的地位。

<<榆树下的欲望》是尤金.奥尼尔的代表作之一.本文从女性主义的角度出发，结合相关女性主义理论，对剧中三位女性角色进行分析。本文分为四个部分。第一部分，阐述相关女性主义理论-以伊莱恩.肖瓦尔特为例。第二部分，介绍《榆树下的欲望》的作者及作品。第三部分，介绍西方三次女性主义思潮对女性主义的影响。第四部分，通过分析文中三位女性角色，探讨随着时间的推移，她们女性主义意识由弱到强的渐进过程，展示奥尼尔对女性的人文关怀，并给出符合当今时代的解读。

Abstract

In the long history, women are always treated unfairly. They have no corresponding rights and status. Even in literary works, men often value masculine values and interests, and rarely stress feminist values. But with the development of the era, feminism is also gradually awakening. They seek for their identity and social identity to gain their status.

Desire Under the Elms is one of the representative works of Eugene O'neill. From the perspective of feminism, this paper analyzes the three female roles in the play, combining with the theory of feminism. This article is divided into four parts. In the first part it expounds the related feminist theory of Elaine Showalter. In the second part it introduces the author and works of Desire Under the Elms. In the third part it discuss the influence of the three waves of feminism in the West on feminism. In the fourth part, through the analysis of the three female roles in the drama, it explores the gradual process of feminist consciousness as time goes on. It shows O'neill's great concern for women and gives an interpretation that is in line with the present day.
