A Comparative Analysis of Two Versions of Nightingale and Rose from the Perspective of Intercultural Communication

Abstract

As one of the most classic literary fairy tales, Nightingale and Rose has both straightforward and easy-to-understand features, as well as its literary value, and has therefore been translated into a wide variety of versions. However, there are relatively few researches based on the different translations of Nightingale the Rose. Therefore, this thesis explores the translation skills of literary fairy tale from the perspective of intercultural communication by comparing the translations of two Chinese versions of Nightingale and Rose.

This thesis is mainly divided into three parts. The first part briefly introduces the relevant knowledge of intercultural communication, including its three development stages, core ideas and its impact on translation. The second part mainly introduces the content of the Nightingale and Rose, the original author, and the reasons of selection for the two Chinese translations of Lin Huiyin and Tan Yinzhou. The third part compares the differences in terms of vocabulary, sentence structure, and emotive expressions between the two Chinese versions of Nightingale and Rose and the different effects achieved.

Finally, the thesis draws the following conclusions: In the two Chinese versions of Nightingale and Rose, Tan Yingzhou chooses more concise and understandable vocabulary and sentence structure, making his translation more in line with children's reading needs. Lin Huiyin uses a richer way to express emotions, making her translation more appealing to adult readers and more likely to arise deeper thinking. This thesis hopes to provide new ideas for the translation of literary fairy tales like Nightingale and Rose, so that literary fairy tales can attract more children readers and adult readers at the same time.
