An Analysis of Functions of Vague Language in English Business Contracts

Abstract

Ambiguity is one of the basic attributes of natural language, and vagueness is also an objective and widespread existence in all fields of human life. In recent years, vague language has also attracted the attention of a majority of scholars, and its research field is also expanding. Vague language is widely used in all kinds of writings, including English business contracts. The correct use of vague language can ensure that the expression of business English contract is accurate, rigorous, courteous and appropriate; on the other hand, the improper use of vague language will bring certain economic losses and legal troubles to both parties.

This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part is mainly about the related basic research of vague language, including its definition, origin and classification. The second part introduces the writing principles and language features of business English contracts, discussing its basic writing methods. The third part probes into the pragmatic functions of vague language in business English contracts through the analysis of related examples. The fourth part mainly introduces the negative functions functions of vague language and the ways to avoid them, so that people can avoid the loss caused by the semantic blurring in the contract. Through analysis, this paper points out the different pragmatic functions of vague language in English business contracts and how to avoid the use of misty language effectively, with the hope of helping readers to write English business contracts more accurately and avoid trade disputes.
