Influence of Self-concept on English Language Learning of Overseas Chinese Students in America

Abstract

Recent years, more and more Chinese students have studied abroad, and China has gradually become a major source for overseas students. At present, many scholars in non-English speaking countries have studied English learning, based on Krashen's affective filtering hypothesis. However, the number of that study by Chinese native speakers is relatively small. Therefore, with a method of questionnaire survey, this paper applies self-concept theory under Krashen's affective filtering hypothesis to explore the influence of self-concept on English language learning of overseas Chinese students in America.

It is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the theory of self-concept and its application. The second part illuminates the current situation of Chinese students studying in the United States and analyzes the problems encountered by these learners. The third part analyzes the influence of self-concept on those overseas students, including motivation, self-confidence and anxiety. Based on the previous discussion, the fourth part provides some effective learning methods, such as, controlling emotions to decrease anxiety, using positive self-implications to enhance self-confidence and exploring effective communication to strengthen culture identity.

This paper finally concludes that self-concept has a profound influence on students' English learning, and motivation from inner heart, self-confidence and decreasing anxiety are all key elements for them to improve their English learning efficiently. The author hopes this paper could provide some enlightenment for both Chinese domestic English learners and overseas Chinese students.
