简·奥斯汀是英国十八世纪末、十九世纪初著名的女性作家，她总是以其独特的乡村视角，用幽默讽刺的笔法真实而细腻的描绘英国小镇上中产阶级的生活和思想，尤其喜爱描写当时英国乡绅与淑女之间的爱情及婚姻，生动再现了当时人们的爱情观与择偶观。《理智与情感》是奥斯汀的处女作，主要围绕两姐妹的择偶故事描写，姐姐埃莉诺重视理智，而妹妹玛丽安则重视情感。本文主要研究玛丽安由感性走向理性的成长过程，对她一开始的性格特征、性格转变的原因以及最终形象进行探究，为研究奥斯汀的其他人物提供借鉴。

Abstract

Jane Austen is a famous woman writer in English Literature in the late 18th century and early 19th century. She always truly and meticulously describes the life and thoughts of middle-class families who live in small towns of Britain in a humorous and irony way. She particularly likes portraying the love and marriage between English gentlemen and ladies, which vividly makes people’s attitudes towards love and marriage at that time reappeared. Sense and sensibility, as Austen’s first novel, mainly focuses on the two sisters’ love stories. Elinor, the elder sister, represents sense, while Marianne, the younger sister, represents sensibility. This thesis centers on the growth of Marianne, who grows from sensibility to sense. Her personalities in the beginning, the causes of her change and her final image will be studied in this thesis. The writer hopes the thesis may provide guidance for the analysis of other characters written by Austen.
