Abstract and Key Words

Abstract：The paper overviews briefly the translation of translation of Government Work Report,    the most typical political document in China. Firstly, the paper focuses on the comparison of political documents both in Chinese and English. Through this comparison, striking differences between these two versions of political documents are given due attention and discussed. Based on the equivalence theory, a detailed analysis is carried out at three different levels, i.e. the lexical, sentence, and discourse. Every level is represented by some problems which deserve special attention. Generally, the paper aims to study the strategy taken by translators when translating the report, especially through the reflection of the equivalence theory.

摘要： 本文以政治文献中最典型的政府工作报告为例，对报告的翻译作了综述介绍。首先通过对中外政治文献的比较，得出一些不同点，作为下文进一步分析的主要问题。之后基于等值理论展开不同层次的详细分析，分别是词汇层面，句子层面和段落层面，每一个层面都有几点值得注意的难点。总而言之，此文目的是通过政府工作报告中所反映出的等值理论探讨报告翻译中所采取的策略。

1. Introduction
With the development of China's economy and culture, China plays an increasingly important role in the international political arena. More and more countries focus their eyes on Chinese policies and other significant documents issued by Chinese government. Among all these materials, Government Work Report has the utmost importance of guiding the country and publicizing China's status quo to the outside world.
To make the government work report more understandable to the foreigners, its translation requires accuracy. Good translation of Government Work Report enables foreigners to witness an prosperous and authentic China. However, different cultures and political systems become two major obstacles in translation. How can we overcome these difficulties remains a problem which is heatedly discussed in the circle of translation, also the topic in this thesis.
Equivalence is first raised by Nida in the 1970s, and Chinese translators adopted this theory in their translation in the 1990s. Chinese translators like Wu Xinxiang and Li'anhong explored the theory in a thesis published in 1984, expressing their interpretation of the equivalence theory. In terms of translating government documents, several translators of official documents issued their thesis on this topic, among which Professor Cheng Zhengqiu's articles deals with political equivalence. It serves as guideline for most translation of political documents. Wang Nongsheng, as a key translator of different political publicies, issued his review on his experience of translating Government Work Report.
