Abstract

Aesthetics has a special meaning for the translation theoretical studies in China ever since the activity of translation came into being. Because in Chinese, language function is inseparable from aesthetic judgment. Up to date, many translators have contributed a lot to the studies of aesthetic issues and thus enriched the theoretical studies of translation in general.
According to Professor Liu Miqing, literary translation is to use the target language to reproduce the aesthetic constitutes of the original works in the target text. The reproduction is a process that comprises aesthetic comprehension, aesthetic transformation and aesthetic representation. In the whole reproduction, representation is the core of aesthetic judgment, for it conveys the aspects of literary beauty and artistic style into the target text.
This thesis explores on some relevant issues of the reproduction of comprehension, transformation and representation, illustrated by an analysis of Dr. Lin Yutang’s English version of Shen Fu’s Six Chapters of a Floating Life. Dr. Lin’s aesthetic translation theories are employed in the analysis of the version. The thesis begins with a brief review of the development of aesthetic translation theories in both China and the West, and then the theoretical foundation of the thesis. Take some typical examples in Dr. Lin’s English version of Six Chapters of a Floating Life as the study case; in Chapter 4 the author will give a detailed analysis on the aesthetics of the diction, then structure, and finally the rhetorical devices. With the analysis, the thesis shows the impressiveness of aesthetics in literary translation and the application of Dr. Lin’s translation methods.

摘 要

从古自今,美学对中国翻译理论研究一只具有重要意义。对中国人而言,语言功能与审美判断是密不可分的。长久以来,出现了不计其数的译者对中国传统翻译美学研究做出贡献,促进美学与翻译的结合。
依据刘宓庆教授的理论,文学翻译是语言再现的艺术,是审美的翻译。作为语言再现的艺术,文学翻译需用另一种语言(译语)去再现原作的美,它包括审美理解、审美转化和审美再现三个步骤。其中文学翻译中的审美再现建立在对审美客体(原文)的理解之上,是将原文转化为译文的过程,也是翻译审美体验的最为核心的环节,最能体现译者的水平与功力。
本文首先回顾了东西方翻译史上美学与翻译结合的渊源与发展,以及现代翻译美学的主要理论,通过对林语堂译《浮生六记》个例中翻译审美再现过程的具体语料分析,探讨林译《浮生六记》中的审美理论及时间。第四章会着重从语言、结构和修辞三方面来分析。林译本《浮生六记》是翻译中审美再现的典范,代表了作者在翻译领域与英文创作领域的最高成就,有许多成功经典之处值得更深的挖掘与思考。
