Abstract

In recent years, as China plays an increasingly important role in international affairs, there are more and more English coverage about China. The words with Chinese characteristics refer to those words that epitomize the special objects and phenomena of China, involving various fields and aspects like Chinese politics, economy, history, society, or daily life. They serve as a mirror of the Chinese society, and play an important role in communicating with foreign countries. Successful translation of the words with Chinese characteristics can provide better insight into China’s development and social life to the outside world.
The thesis consists of three parts. The first part briefly introduces the definition, classification, and features of Chinese neologisms. Chinese neologisms are unique, cultural embedded, informative and have no equivalent terms in English. The second part discusses some commonly used strategies for translating Chinese neologisms, for example, transliteration, explanation, annotation, and so on. The third part analyzes the guiding principles of choosing translation strategies on different occasions.

摘  要

近年来,随着中国的国际影响力与日俱增,有关中国的英文报道越来越多。中国特色新词是指那些集中体现中国特有的事物和现象的词语,涉及中国政治、经济、历史、社会及生活的方方面面。中国特色新词是反映中国社会的镜子,在对外交流中扮演重要角色。准确地传译中国特色新词有利于外界更好地了解中国的社会风貌和最新发展。
本文分为三个部分。第一部分简要介绍了中国特色新词的定义、分类、特征。中国特色新词形式独特、文化内涵深厚、信息承载量大,且在英语中缺乏对等词汇。第二部分讨论了翻译中国特色新词的常用策略,例如音译、解释、加注等。第三部分分析了在不同情形下翻译中国特色新词时,选择翻译策略的原则。
