Abstract:

With the improvement of cultural exchange between China and Western countries, Chinese readers have more access to authentic English news from newspapers and magazines of English-speaking countries. Because of its significant role in news, the news headlines, especially its translation, is drawing more attention. Domestic research on the subject is underway, with its focus largely concentrated on functions, features and translation strategies of English news headlines. The thesis is based on the research of the functions, features and strategies of English news headlines to construct the importance of the translation of English news headlines. News headlines have four basic functions: informative, expressive, aesthetic and vocative. News headlines have four basic features:lexical, syntactical, cultural and rhetorical. The paper proposes such strategies such as: literal translation, free translation, addition, omission and adaptation. And the like for news headlines translation.

随着中西方文化交流的日益加强，中国读者有更多机会接触到英语国家报刊原汁原味的新闻内容。标题作为整个新闻的点睛之笔，其翻译问题受到越来越多的关注。国内这一领域的研究已有所起步，焦点多集中在对英语新闻标题功能，特点和翻译技巧的探讨方面。
本文拟对英语新闻标题的功能，特点和翻译策略的研究来说明英语新闻标题翻译的重要性。新闻标题的基本功能有四种，即信息、表达、美感和号召。新闻标题的基本特点有四种，即词汇、句法、文化和修辞。新闻标题翻译的基本策略有五种，逐字翻译、自由翻译、增译法、减译法和适应法。

Introduction
    Nowadays, news is everywhere in our daily life, and its types are varied, TV news, news on the Internet, economic news, entertainment news, domestics news, international news, to name just a few. I am interested in news headlines from my experience of reading news on newspapers, on the Internet, or from mobile phones. A news item would immediately catch my eyes when its headline is attractive or looks unusual, while commonplace titles often get ignored, even through its story might be worth reading. In an age of rapidly changing world and a time-pressing society, news headlines must be carefully constructed and the practice itself deserves some exploration of academic research. News keeps us informed of what is going on around us and in the same time provides us with enjoyment. It is hard to think what life would be like without news. Newspapers and magazines are a major means that brings us into contract with news.
    As an indispensable part of news, headlines play an irreplaceable role. Besides being a guide to news contents, they are also aesthetically designed to “attract eyeballs” of readers, so the quality of headlines does matter much to news. In this sense, headlines function like a filter------for readers to make a decision whether or not to read the news stories under the headlines. A survey shows that 94% of the readers start news reading from the headlines.
