摘  要

通过查阅反语的定义,英语反语是指用词语表达与本意相反的意思，通常以一个笑话和一种特定的语气来体现。作为一种修辞手法和说话方式，它被广泛运用于文学作品和日常生活，来达到说话者强调潜在意义的目的。文学作品中经常会出现反语，这一现象要求我们正确理解它的功能和使用方法。由于缺乏反语的相关知识，读者很难体会文学作品中的言外之意和讲述人的深层感受。因此若想打造出完善的翻译作品，比较中英两个版本反语的语用功能是非常必要的。基于前人对英语反语的研究，本文将从多方面继续深入讨论其在文学翻译中的运用。并根据分析结果，提出一些建议，从而帮助读者更好地理解文学作品，更重要的是提高笔译质量。

Abstract

English irony refers to using words to express the opposite meaning of what you really mean, usually in the form of jokes and with a particular tone of voice to shows this, according to the dictionaries. It is widely used as a rhetorical device in literature and a way of speaking in daily life so the speakers can achieve the goal of emphasizing the underlying meaning. English irony can be easily found in literature, which appears to need a correct understanding of its functions and usage. Due to the lack of proficient knowledge of irony, readers may find it difficult to read between the lines and taste the deep feelings of the narrators. So it is necessary to compare different pragmatic functions between the English and Chinese versions if you want to achieve a good translation of irony. Led by the previous studies of English irony, this paper will continue with the discussion about its applications to literary translation from several perspectives. Then based on the results, suggestions are made to help to achieve a better and a more comprehensive understanding of literary works and at last to improve the quality of literary translation.
