Abstract:

Listening as a means of communication is used frequently in everyday life. Therefore, listening plays a momentous role in communication and language learning, so it is obvious that listening is very important for people, especially for language learners. This paper explores the current situation of English majors’ listening, points out there are some problems in English listening learning: inaccurate pronunciation, small vocabulary, lack of background knowledge, lack of listening skills and so on. Finally, this paper puts forward some strategies for English majors: improving pronunciation, enriching vocabulary, strengthening English grammar, amplifying relevant background knowledge, forming good listening habits, maintaining good attitudes, doing more listening training, choosing appropriate materials and so forth to improve our listening ability.

摘 要:

听作为人们进行语言交际的手段之一,在日常生活中使用十分广泛。因此毋庸置疑,对于沟通来说,听是非常重要的;对于学习语言的人来说,听就显得更为重要了;对于英语专业的学生来说,听也是至关重要的。本文探讨了当前英语专业学生听力现状以及英语听力学习中普遍存在的一些问题,分析了影响英语专业学生听力的一些因素:发音不准确、词汇量小、缺乏背景知识、缺乏听力技巧等等。最后,针对存在的问题提出了相应的策略:改善发音,扩大词汇量,强化语法知识,扩大相关的知识面,养成好的学习习惯,保持良好的心态,做听力技巧的训练,选择合适的听力材料等等,以利于提高英语专业学生的听力水平。

Introduction
 Language is a method of verbal communication, so listening is an essential section of communication. According to Krashen’s Language Input Hypothesis, it is not possible to master a second language without input. That’s to say, without sufficient input, there will be no output. Listening as an approach to input, through listening we can obtain some information from the addressor and read his or her moods, which can make us communicate with the speaker smoothly. What’s more, we human beings are inevitable to use listening when we contact with other people, “research has showed that it takes us 40-50% of communicative time to listen, 25-30% to speak, 11-16% to read, about 9% to write.” Therefore, listening plays a critical part in our everyday communication. It is more important to master listening well for language learners, for English majors in China, listening is regarded as a significant section for our second language acquisition. English is our second language and has been concerned about decades of years. And we still have to pass some examinations, such as TEM-4, TEM-8 and so on, which listening occupies respectable proportions. Because listening enables us to widen our knowledge, learn distinct cultures, and pave way for our further study. Furthermore, effective learning strategies are the warranty of successful study. Our society develops so rapidly. If we intend to advance with the times, we must master the learning strategies to improve our ability and renew our knowledge. As a result, it is useful for English majors to study English listening strategies to solve listening problems. This paper is composed of three parts: Part one illustrates current situation of English majors’ listening. Part two analyzes main factors affecting English majors’ listening ability. Part three puts forward some strategies to improve English listening ability of English majors.
