Abstract
As the main stylistic symbol of newspapers or online English news, headlines of news concisely generalize the content of the news and help readers to obtain information in a more prompt access. As in this way, to understand the features of the headlines, especially the features of rhetoric in the headlines, could help the readers to read newspapers and online English news more effectively. At the same time it could cultivate the linguistic accomplishment and aesthetics of the news readers. This paper will discuss the application of rhetoric in the creation of English news headlines and the influence of rhetoric on the readers. The process of analysis includes three parts: classification of rhetoric in English media news headlines, functions of rhetoric in English media news headlines and comparison of rhetoric between English news headlines and Chinese news headlines.

Under the circumstance of globalization, English news headlines nowadays have permeated into various aspects of our lives. As the main stylistic symbol of newspapers or online English news, headlines of news concisely generalize the content of the news and help readers to obtain information in a more prompt access. As in this way, to understand the features of the headlines, especially the features of rhetoric in the headlines, could help the readers to read newspapers and online English news more effectively. At the mean time it could cultivate the linguistic accomplishment and aesthetics of the news readers. In the news headlines, authors of the news employ different rhetoric, which is accompanied with beauty of phonetics, lexicology and artistic conception, to make their works more attractive, and also to arouse readers’ desire to read the news.
