摘　要

衔接与连贯是语篇研究中的两个重要概念。衔接与连贯的关系及其应用也是语篇分析的重要课题。在Halliday and Hasan出版了Cohesion in English一书中，提出将衔接以此作为语篇分析中的专业术语之后引起了世界上语言学家们对语篇分析的重视。但是Halliday and Hasan认为语篇的衔接机制是体现在语篇形式上的，起衔接机制是能在语篇中找到其预设项目的。这对衔接范围的设定就太过了狭隘了。因此，在之后几十年时间里，由于语言学家们对语篇研究角度不同，方法不同，对于两者的关系问题也持有不同的看法。本文通过调查、文献研究和对比等方法，在各语言学家所提出观点的基础上，有系统的提出对衔接与连贯这两个概念的理解，论述语言学界对两者关系所提出的观点，并对衔接与连贯在学习中的实际应用作了论述。

Abstract

Cohesion and coherence are two important concepts in text research. The relationship between cohesion and coherence is also important subject in text analysis. After Halliday and Hasan published the work Cohesion in English which treats the word cohesion as a linguistic term, more and more linguistics pay much attention to text analysis. However, Halliday and Hasan held a view that cohesive devices were embodied in the form of language, and the cohesive devices could be found in the text surface. But this range of cohesion was too narrow. So, in the following several years, they different linguists held different views on the concept of cohesion and coherence as well as their relationship because they did research in different ways. This thesis mainly discusses the definition of the two terms on the basis of many linguists’ views through research, documental method, comparative method, citing method etc. Then I will draw my own conclusion that there are two meaning levels about cohesion. One is that it is a semantic connection realizing text coherent; the other is a kind of surface linguistic features of a coherent text. In fact, cohesion cannot account fully for the coherence of a text. It is a kind of devices to realize text coherence, not a necessary device. And it also talks about the relationship between cohesion and coherence that put forward by the linguistics. Besides, it discusses the application of two terms about their theories in some relative fields.

1 Introduction
Cohesion and coherence are two important terms in textual linguistics. Linguists made different definitions towards the two terms because they studied text in different ways. Take coherence for example, Crystal defined coherence as the underlying functional connectedness of a discourse.
