摘 要

弗吉尼亚•伍尔夫是意识流小说理论和创作的成功典范。她的文学创作彻底摒弃传统的现实主义小说的写法，转而关注人物的内心世界。这位伦敦文学界的核心人物，同时也是布卢姆茨伯里派的成员之一，第一次正式把“双性同体”思想引入文学评论。近年来，她的许多著作受到关注，如《奥兰多》，《灯塔行》，《雅克的房间》等。《达洛维夫人》也是其中之一，是作者运用意识流手法讲述故事的第一部著作。事实上，女主人公达洛维夫人是双性同体典型人物。作者通过女主人公内心意识流动来揭示女性在婚姻生活中的真相---强迫的异性恋和压抑的女同性恋，批评规范社会权力的异性恋婚姻制度。她的性格特征综合了传统意义上的男女特征，她既冷漠、理智又热衷于举办晚会这类琐事。该论文将浅析达洛维夫人的双性同体性格，分别解读人物性格里的男性特征和女性特征。

Abstract

Virginia Woolf is a successful paragon of stream of consciousness fiction theory and creation. Her masterpieces completely abandon traditional means of realism, and put focus on characters’ internal world. As a member of Bloomsbury Group, she is a core figure of London literary society. It is Virginia Woolf who first formally introduced the thought of androgyny into literary criticism. In recent years, many of her works are in the spotlight, such as Orlando, To the Lighthouse, Jacob’s Room. Mrs. Dalloway is among those works. Mrs. Dalloway is the first novel of stream of consciousness storytelling by Virginia Woolf. As a matter of fact, the heroine Mrs. Dalloway is a typical image of androgyny. Through a series of descriptions on Mrs. Dalloway’s internal stream of consciousness, the author attempts to reveal the truth of what women’s life looks like in marriage---compulsory heterosexuality and repressed lesbianism, aimed to criticize socially and culturally regulated heterosexual marriage. Her character traits are both in combination with masculine and feminine sides. She is cold and hard. On the other side, she is intent on something trivial like hosting parties. Based on an androgynous reading of Mrs. Dalloway, this thesis is going to analyze both of the masculine and feminine traits of hers respectively.

1 Introduction
1.1 Background Information

The word “androgyny” is derived from Greek mythology, consisting of two morphemes, “andr-” and “gny-”, meaning “man” and meaning “woman” respectively. In botany and biology, it refers to plants and animals that have the capacity to change sex or to fertilize themselves. When it comes to medical community, it is applied to those who were born with ambiguous genitalia. While in psychology, it represents an individual who possesses both masculine and feminine psychological traits.
