Abstract

Alice Walker is one of the most outstanding and influential black women writers in the American literary world since the 1970s. Alice Walker has devoted herself to the writing of many good works; meantime, she also puts forward a unique term named womanism. In all of her works, The Color Purple has always been considered as her notable work. It is obvious that this novel aroused strong reaction once it was published in 1982. Besides, this novel is also regarded as the specific practice of Alice’s theory of womanism. This novel is mainly about the growth story of black women. As for these black women in the novel, they finally become independent by making efforts to get rid of the oppression of black men. The black women’s growth story has a deep effect on the movement of women’s liberation. In addition to the growth of black women, there is no doubt that the growth of black men is of great importance. In this novel, the black men are in constant growth and transformation due to the growth of black women and the influence of womanism.

This thesis is to portray the process of black men’s transformation, and then make an analysis of the reasons for their transformation. As a consequence of that, it is necessary for the black men to have the courage to break through the bondage of the value system of traditional patriarchy and get rid of the negative influence of it. And then they can completely liberate themselves in psychological aspect and realize the self-value. Only by doing this can black men and women respect each other and live a harmonious life together. What’s more, both of them can obtain the emancipation of their soul completely.
