摘要

《呼啸山庄》是艾米丽勃朗特一生唯一的作品，现在它已经被公认为是英国文学史上伟大的小说之一。这部小说主要讲述了男主人公希斯克利夫和女主人公凯瑟琳之间的爱情以及在凯瑟琳因为种种原因背叛了他之后，他对恩萧和林惇两大家族以及他们后代的报复。他的复仇看上去似乎很疯狂，卑鄙，并且反常。希斯克利夫给读者们留下了深刻的印象。本文主要分析了他性格的变化以及导致这些变化发生的原因。他的性格发生了两次变化, 从善良变成扭曲，最终回归人性。其实，希斯克利夫的一生就是一场悲剧。而导致他性格变化的原因就是社会的腐败和社会等级以及金钱的观念。

Abstract

    Wuthering Heights is the sole novel in Emily Bronte’s life, and it is now widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature. The novel mainly shows us the love between the protagonist Heathcliff and the heroine, Catherine, and after Catherine’s betrayal to their love, Heathcliff’s revenges to the two families, Earn Show and Linton, and their offspring. His revenges seemed very crazy, sordid and unnatural. The protagonist Heathcliff gives readers a great impression. This thesis mainly analyses the change of Heathcliff’s character and its formation. There are two changes happened in his character, from kindness to distortion，then return to nature. In face, Heathcliff’s life is a tragedy. And the essential reasons that resulted in his changes are the society’s corruption, and the concept of social class and money.

1. Introduction
Wuthering Heights was written by Emile Bronte, who is declared as a “romantic rebel”. She was a famous writer in 19th century in Britain. In fact, after 30 years of obscurity, she died in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure. This novel was not accepted by readers when it was first published in 1847. It began to draw readers’ attention when received a second printing with an introduction by her sister Charlotte, and it is now widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature.
