Abstract:

Jane Austen (1775-1817), one of England’s most famous novelists in the late 18th century and the early 19th century, realistically depicts the life and thoughts of British middle-class people at that time. Women's issues being her main concern, she depicts women’s hesitation and sufferings. Sense and Sensibility is Austen’s first-published novel with marriage as its theme. After experiencing profound lessons, Marianne finally realizes that she should have learned from her sister Eleanor's prudent and serious attitudes towards love and marriage. Emma is the last-published novel in Austen’s lifetime. The novel is about how the heroine takes pains to make self-discovery and to get rid of her fantasies. Both of the novels are about the growth of young women, who have suffered a lot from their own faults and finally overcome their own defects to achieve maturity. This paper aims to analyze the growth of the two heroines through the comparison of the two novels. The first part is an introduction to the two heroines. The second part discusses the similarities in their growth. The third part discusses the differences in their growth. The fourth part analyses the causes of their differences. The last part discusses the influence of Jane Austen’s viewpoint on the portrayal of these two heroines.

简.奥斯汀（1775—1817），十八世纪末十九世纪初英国最著名的现实主义小说家，以极其写实的手法刻画了当时英国中产阶级的生活和思想。她关注女性问题并写出了妇女的彷徨和苦闷。《理智与情感》是奥斯汀发表的第一部以婚姻为主题的小说，在经历深刻教训后,玛丽安最终认识到她早该学习姐姐埃丽诺对待婚姻和恋爱的审慎严肃的态度。《爱玛》是奥斯汀生前发表的最后一部小说，小说是关于女主人公如何痛苦地进行自我发现并打消幻想的。两部小说都是关于年轻女子的成长，讲述她们如何因自身犯下的错误而受到痛苦的教训、并克服她们自身缺陷以达到成熟的。本文旨在通过对这两部小说的比较来研究两位女主人公的成长历程。第一部分简单介绍玛丽安和爱玛的成长，第二部分分析两者成长的相同之处，第三部分分析两者成长的不同之处，第四部分分析导致其成长差异的成因，最后阐述作者简.奥斯汀个人观点对这两位女主人公人物刻画产生的影响。
