Abstract:

Scarlett, the heroine of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the wind, is originally an indulged and headstrong 16-year-old southern belle. After experiencing a series of hardships, Scarlett gradually proves that she is a representative of new women and sets a good  example for females of her time. Through the analysis of the heroine’s painful process from the perspectives of her rebellious spirit, her strong will and her feminist awareness, this paper aims to analyze the modernism in Scarlett’s personalities. The first part of the body of the paper mainly discusses Scarlett’s rebellious spirit, both against old conventions and social restrictions on women. The second part describes her strong will in seeking love and saving Tara. The third part focuses on Scarlett’s feminist awareness, including her pursuit of equality with men, attitudes towards marriages as well as her positive attitudes towards “tomorrow”.

1. Introduction
Margaret Mitchell’s one and only novel Gone with the wind was published in 1936 and won the Pulitzer Prize in the next year. The book has remained popular since 1936, not only in the United States, but all over the world. Besides, more than 30 million copies have been sold in total.
The author Margaret Mitchell was born in an upper class family in Atlanta, Georgia. Her father Eugene Muse Mitchell was an outstanding lawyer and her mother Mary Isabelle Stephens a suffragist. In her hometown, people were always talking about the Civil War, and the heroes’ events impressed her deeply. So the stories eventually provided materials for her novel. Margaret Mitchell received a feminist education while she was a little girl. She adopted her mother’s feminist leanings though it came into collision with her father’s conservative ideas. Therefore, it is easy to find that her novel is full of the idea of women’s equality and independence with men.
