Abstract

1949 Nobel Literature Prize winner William Faulkner is a household name, a shining star in the altar of literature world. He distinguished himself by many famous works，short or long stories. Short as the novel Dry September is, it, nevertheless, never hinders the themes Faulkner wanted to express and the messages he intended to convey to his readers. As a native in southern America, Faulkner had indispensable connection with his homeland, but his affection held towards south did not stand in the way of his enormous efforts to expose the suffocating systems in the South. He ruthlessly condemned the paternal line society, the oppression on both white men and women, also the notorious white supremacy policy. He hoped his work could serve to wake people to shake off their shackles.
The story mainly tells how a bunch of white men, in a barber shop, decided the guilt of a black person and finally killed him without any hard evidence but a piece of gossip that the black guy had raped a white woman. Through analysis of the story, this thesis aims to reveal the oppression on different kinds of people in the southern society at that time. The main part of this thesis is divided into three sections, focusing on the oppression on white women, the oppression on white men and the                   
oppression on black men.
By analyzing the oppression on people at that time, we can thus get a glimpse of the feeling Faulkner held towards the southern society and the sympathies he had towards people. And we can gain a deeper perception of the renowned writer Faulkner and his thoughts.

摘 要

诺贝尔文学奖获得者威廉福克纳创作了许多家喻户晓的长篇和短篇小说，其中《干旱的九月》这部小说是在其写作顶峰时期创作的，虽然篇幅堪称福克纳短篇小说中之最短一篇，但丝毫不影响福克纳想要表达的情感以及传递给读者们的信息。作为土生土长的美国南方人，福克纳虽然对自己故乡有着难以割舍的依恋之情，但是面对内战过后，逐渐瓦解的南方制度，对父权主义，南方妇道对女性的压迫，以及无情的种族制度，他也毫不留情的揭露，抨击，希望能唤醒受着南方社会条条框框制约的人们。
 小说主要讲述了一群白人男性在理发店里因为一则流言，就决定对黑人梅耶斯施以私刑。这则关于黑人强将了白人女性的流言无法证实，也不需要被证实，但却让一个无辜的人因此丧命。而本论文，通过分析文章内容，旨在揭示当时南方社会不同人群受到的不同的压迫。论文主要讨论了社会对三类人群人性的摧残，分别是对白人女性的摧残，对白人男性的摧残以及对黑人的迫害。
 通过分析我们可以对福克纳对南方社会所持的态度有所了解。也可以感受到他对人性这一主题的探索和对那些社会受害者的关怀。有利于我们进一步研究福克纳以及他的思想。
