Abstract

The Pride and Prejudice is the most successful one among Jane Austen`s works. Many readers are fond of main characters in the novel. But seldom of them can pay little attentions on Charlotte Lucas when reading this novel. And a lot of critics even regard Charlotte as the bad example when they are discussing about the marriage in this novel. However, through carefully analyzing the plot of the novel and knowing relating background of woman in 18 century of the Britain, we can find another statue of Charlotte Lucas.
This paper is aimed to analyze and argue the nature of Charlotte’s marriage to prove that Lucas is not the stupid women, who sells her own life and love for money, but a smart women, who has same intelligence as the main character Elizabeth.
This paper consists of three parts. In the first part, the author will introduce Charlotte and main four marriages in the novel. Readers can have general knowing about this novel and Charlotte Lucas.
And in second part, author wants to show you main comments about Charlotte in the literary circle at present. Many critics give Lucas a very low comments and think she is lack of Elizabeth’s courage. She is a short-sighted woman, who is blinded by money.
But in third part, author will analyze the social background and Charlotte’s conditions to show that her decision to get married with Collin is right and prove her intelligence.

《傲慢与偏见》是简•奥斯丁的作品中最成功的一个。许多读者都很喜欢小说的主要人物。但是阅读这本小说的时候很少人会去少关注夏绿蒂•卢卡斯。甚至很多批评家在讨论这部小说的婚姻观时，把夏洛特列为反例。然而,通过仔细分析小说的情节和了解18世纪的英国妇女相关的社会背景,我们能找到夏绿蒂•卢卡斯的另一面。本文旨在分析夏洛特的婚姻本质从而来证明，卢卡斯并不是人们口中所说的为钱出卖自己爱情的人,相反，她是一个极度聪颖的人物，她的智慧甚至不低于主角伊丽莎白。
本文由三个部分组成。在第一部分中,作者将介绍夏洛特此人物的大概背景以及文中的主要四种婚姻观。读者可以通过这部分对夏洛特以及这部小说有个大概了解。第二部分,作者想要向您展示目前文学界中对夏洛特的普遍评论。许多评论家都给了卢卡斯极低的评论，认为她缺少伊丽莎白的勇气。她是一个被金钱遮蔽双眼的人。
但在第三部分,作者将分析当时社会背景和夏洛特的自身条件来表明她和科林结婚的决定是正确的，从而来证明她的智慧。
