Abstract

Humor is a common form of social communication, and it often makes people laugh. It can alleviate contradictions, mediate interpersonal relationship at the critical moment. Verbal humor is the essence of human language, which reflects the wisdom and interest of human beings. The humorous language in Good Luck Charlie has been the highlight in the play, and was deeply loved by the audience. This thesis Good Luck Charlie studies the verbal humor in from the perspective of Cooperative Principle. It shows that verbal humor in Good Luck Charlie is mainly resulted from the violation of Cooperative Principle, which reveals the mechanism of generating verbal humor in situation comedies. The study may have a positive meaning to appreciate the phenomenon of verbal humor.

摘要

幽默是一种常见的社会交际形式，它常常令人捧腹大笑，关键的时刻能缓解矛盾，调解人际关系。幽默言语是人类语言的精华，体现了人类的智慧与情趣。美国电视情景剧《查莉的成长日记》中幽默诙谐的语言一直是该剧中的亮点，深受观众的喜爱。本文基于合作原则，以情景喜剧《查莉的成长日记》为例，对其中的言语幽默进行了研究。研究结果表明，《查莉的成长日记》中的言语幽默主要是违反了合作原则的四准则而导致。本文的研究能揭示情景喜剧中言语幽默产生的机制，对于更好鉴别与赏析幽默言语现象有一定的积极意义。

1.1 Definition and Function of Humor
Palmer(1994) regards humor as something that can make people laugh. He thought humor is anything that can lead to fun and interests potentially. Humor can be either a verbal or non-verbal behavior of human beings. Humor is the essence of human beings. It can make people feel happy and comfortable. Humorous speeches always have deep meanings which can amuse people.
Humor frequently appears in our daily life, so we are familiar with it. To some degree, it plays an instrumental role in people’s daily life. Humor can make people laugh and cheerful. In addition, it can ease the contradiction and maintain interpersonal relationship. It is the essence of human beings and considered as a form of art, which reflects the wisdom and taste of human. It is widely used in people’s daily communication. For instance, it can build a harmonious and pleasant relationship when people communicate with each other. What’s more, humor can help people avoid embarrassment and release the sense of anxiety and disappointment. When they want to avoid unnecessary trouble and embarrassment, they can use humor to give reasonable advice, express his great displeasure or make comments. With the rapid development of economy and technology today, more and more people are under great pressure. Humor can release the life stress effectively and make their life enjoyable.
