Abstract

F• Scott Fitzgerald, one of the greatest American writers in the 20th century, was a representative of the “Lost Generation”. His novels vividly reflected the destruction of the “American Dream” in the 1920s and demonstrated the “wasteland” spirit about the American upper class during the Great Depression. The Great Gatsby was often regarded as the most outstanding work of Fitzgerald, which was a classic representative of American society.
This thesis analyzes the heroine Daisy’s objectified role and her tragic marriage from the feminist perspective, in which Objectification theory is applied. For Gatsby, Daisy is a beautiful and attractive rose whose objectivity is deprived of. Meanwhile, Gatsby treats Daisy as the symbol of wealth and identity, who symbolizes his success. In the eyes of Tom, Daisy is not his wife but a beautiful “vast”. She is just a commodity to for Tom to show off in the upper class. Undoubtedly, Daisy is unhappy in her marriage, because neither she gets concern from her husband nor escapes sorrows that Tom gives to her. All in all, Daisy is unable to get rid of the fence of the marriage.

Chapter One Introduction
1.1 F• Scott Fitzgerald and His Literary Works
F• Scott Fitzgerald (24 September 1896-21 December 1940) was an outstanding American novelist in the 20th century and the most famous chronicler of 1920’s America, an era that he called “the Jazz Age”. He belonged to the best known writers, which included T•S Elliot and Ernest Hemingway, who are committed to recording the post-war lifestyle of the young people. The youth chased after pleasure and money. Through his four “semi-autobiographic novels”, Fitzgerald explored the frustrating effects of the American Dream. They are This Side of Paradise (1920), The Beautiful and the Damned (1922), Tender Is the Night (1934) and The Great Gatsby (1925). Fitzgerald was born in a small business family and admitted to Princeton University in 1913. Because his classmates were most from upper-class families, Fitzgerald wanted to get more recognition due to his self-esteem. Thus, “he made up his feelings of social inferiority by excelling in the thing that he did best, writing for the Triangle Club and the Nassau Literary Magazine.”
