Abstract

Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece of Jane Austen, a British woman novelist. Just as the title shows, the purpose of this novel is to reveal the weakness of human nature. In the novel, Darcy is intelligent and honest, but excessively proud, so he tends to look down on his social inferiors. Due to some reasons, the heroine Elizabeth has prejudice against him. However, over the course of the novel, Elizabeth overcomes her mistaken impression of Darcy and has a new understanding of herself as well as others.  Her marriage with Darcy highlights the power of love and significance of maturity. So this paper is to have a better understanding of how the heroine Elizabeth gradually puts aside the prejudice and gets mature through analyzing the affectional development between her and Darcy.

1    Introduction
Jane Austen (1775 ~1817) is a British female writer whose novels, full of deep thinking as well as rich contents, are the first in the British cultural history to describe ordinary family life and lay the foundation of realistic fictions. Austen was born in Steventon, being the seventh child of Rev. George Austen, rector of the village. Her mother came from a wealthy aristocratic family, with good cultural cultivation. Without going to regular school, Austen received good home education. The main teaching materials were her father’s collection of literature works. By learning these she is quite proficient in the English literature and masters some writing skills.
Austen started to write at about 20 years old and completed six long novels. Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, was her first novel, followed by the publications of Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published in 1818, a year after her death. Each one is perfect, and there is no choosing between them for one who enjoys her quiet irony and her simple delicate analysis of character. (Wu Weiren, 1988) She was especially averse to publicity and popularity, publishing her works anonymously. She died, quietly as she had lived, and unmarried all her life.
