Abstract

William Faulkner (1897-1962) is one of the most influential American novelists, the representative of the Stream of Consciousness in the United States. The women images play great roles in his works. By analyzing them, it can help us understand his works more deeply. This paper aims to re-examine his female complex from the feminism perspective through his most successful and the hardest novel The Sound and the Fury. It first introduces the novel and analyzes the main female characters. Then it explains the real sources of the female characters in Faulkner’s living experiences and discusses the various reasons for the three brothers’ love and hatred to their sister Caddy according to his actual unpeaceful emotional and life experiences. The concluding part points out that, in the novel, the author had created a selfish mother Mrs. Compson, a rebellious daughter Caddy and a kindhearted black servant Dilsey on the basis of his own life. The different feelings he gave to the Compson brothers fully demonstrated his attitudes to those new southern women. To Caddy, the typical new southern woman, Faulkner shows his great regrets for living in the distorted feminism and also his praise for her courage to fight against it.
