Abstract:

A Streetcar Named Desire remained an immortal masterpiece of Tennessee Williams’ tragedy. The drama, with its vivid characters, complicated conflicts, and abundant connotation of the theme, has increasingly attracted the attention of both the academic and the public. From the perspective of “Other”, this paper will have a comprehensive analysis of the inevitable conflicts between “Same” and “Other” in terms of marriage, gender, social status, culture and so on. As a matter of fact, the inextricable conflicts between Blanche and the other characters reflect the contradiction between “Other” and “Same”. Allan and Blanche being the representatives of “Other” in this play, both of their tragedies can disclose the theme that under the irreconcilable contradiction, “Other” is doomed to move toward the path of destruction. Based on the discussion regarding the predicament of the people defined as “Other”, this paper will also discuss how “Other” can go beyond themselves and take charge of their own destines so as to get rid of their status as “Other” under the trend of social development.

1 Introduction
“If Williams is not the most important American playwright,he is certainly one of the most celebrated, rivaled only by Eugene O’Neill and Arthur Miller”
Tennessee Williams (1911-1983), one of the most distinguished literary innovators in the twentieth century in America, published A Streetcar Named Desire, which signified his unprecedented achievement of drama creation. The drama was initially released in Barry Moore Theater in New York in December, 1947, and was repeated on Broadway in the same year. It brought great shock to the American theater. This drama appeared quietly and became an overnight sensation. From then on, long years of mediocrity of American drama have been changed gradually. This hit play ran for 855 performances, which finally won America’s three major drama prizes, the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Award and Donaldson Award. Since then, this play has become a household classic for its profound insight into the deep-seated anxieties about sex and class contradictions; known as “Hamlet of America”, A Streetcar Named Desire has also become one of the cores to decipher the connotation of American materialistic civilization.
