1. Introduction
1.1 George Orwell and his work
In the novel 1984, George Orwell described a horrible society where the totalitarianism came to its summit. The society strangled human nature, deprived of personal freedom and controlled people’s thoughts. Life was on the border of poverty and boringness. But the most dreadful thing was that human-beings living in this society failed to distinguish right from wrong. By analyzing such a world where there was no personality, no love and no critical thinking, George Orwell gave us a warning that we should watch out for our society and strengthen our beliefs, leaving no chance to realize the situation of 1984 in our real world.
Because of the widely spread of this novel, 1984 becomes to a code word for totalitarian country or the day in the future when the world suffers totalitarianism, and “Orwellism”, a word which continuously shows its appearance on international newspapers and magazines also becomes to a code word for such a totalitarian rule with characteristics of George Orwell. 1984 predicts the future world of human society and directs the spearhead at all kinds of totalitarianism, including capitalist society.
This thesis is mainly based on the analysis of the novel 1984, explaining the dystopia thought of George Orwell at great length by dissecting the main characters and their behaviors. And there comes to the conclusion that how totalitarianism persecute the mass in such a society.
