Abstract

F. Scott. Fitzgerald is one of the most important American writers in the 20th century and is regarded as the spokesman of the “Jazz Age”. His masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, is not only a faithful record of the “Jazz Age” but echoes with the writer’s life. The protagonist’s dream in fact is the reflection of the “American Dream”. Based on the former researchers achievements, this thesis will re-examine the “American Dream” in the 1920s by combining the traditional biographical approach and the cultural criticism approach. By a full analysis of the writer’s biography, the cultural context and the main characters of the novel, the thesis tries to demonstrate that the “American Dream” in the 1920s is impossible to attain. In today’s society, where the material is abundant while the spiritual life is outpaced, the novel still carries significance.

Key words: F. S. Fitzgerald; The Great Gatsby; The American Dream; Disenchantment
